There's a bit of an anomaly going on this week on the Peninsula...no lie.
HBO's seven episode "mini-series" Big Little Lies starts filming here on the Monterey Peninsula this week. Film truck and props started to roll into town on Saturday, but other than that it's just another beautiful day in the neighborhood: blue skies, playing whales and an awaiting backdrop for Liane Moriarty's darkly comic drama by the same name to play out.
There's the possibility of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern sightings along the Peninsula who will be starring in David E. Kelley's (Ally McBeal, Picket Fences) adaptation of Moriarty's 2014 novel about three mothers of first graders whose perfect lives "unravel to the point of murder". Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buying Club, Wild) will direct the mini-series. They will be filming all week and cast/crew will return again this spring.
You won't find Otter Elementary here, those scenes are being filmed down in Southern California. But you should find Fisherman's Wharf, parks and beach trails of Pacific Grove (signs are up around Lover's Point and Esplanade Park) and possibly a shopping scene at the Barnyard in Carmel streaming your way when the show airs on HBO next year.
